Surrey: Gunshots were fired at comedian Kapil Sharma’s recently launched restaurant, Kap’s Café, in Surrey, British Columbia, late on Wednesday night. Local authorities confirmed that multiple rounds were discharged, damaging the café’s front and nearby residential buildings. No casualties have been reported.
The shooting, which occurred just days after the restaurant’s soft launch, is being investigated by Surrey RCMP and Canadian anti-terrorism units. Purported videos circulating on social media show a man firing at least nine shots from inside a vehicle at the café’s window before speeding away. Police have cordoned off the area and recovered several bullet cartridges. Forensic teams are reviewing CCTV footage from the vicinity.

Khalistani Terrorist Claims Attack Over “Offensive Remarks”
In a significant development, Harjeet Singh Laddi, a designated terrorist linked to the banned Khalistani outfit Babbar Khalsa International (BKI), has claimed responsibility for the attack. Laddi is one of India’s most wanted men, currently facing charges filed by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) in a high-profile murder case in Punjab.
According to Indian media reports, Laddi allegedly ordered the shooting in retaliation to a past remark made by Sharma that was deemed offensive. Authorities are now exploring links to Khalistani extremist activities operating from Canadian soil, with ties to similar extortion and intimidation incidents targeting South Asian business owners in the region.

Kapil Sharma Silent, Community on Edge
Kapil Sharma, known for his long-running comedy shows in India, has not issued any public statement yet. The comedian and his wife Ginni Chatrath, who co-manages the business, opened Kap’s Café in Surrey last week. The cafe—designed with blush pink interiors and crystal chandeliers—had quickly gained popularity among the Indian diaspora in the area.

The attack has sparked concern across the Indo-Canadian community, many of whom are already on alert following recent extortion-related shootings in Surrey. Just last month, two individuals were arrested on gun and arson charges linked to threats and extortion demands targeting South Asian business owners. Activists had raised the alarm over increasing attempts to silence public figures and entrepreneurs who resist financial extortion or ideological intimidation.
Authorities Investigate Links to Broader Threat Network
The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) confirmed that no arrests have been made so far. “All leads are being pursued,” a spokesperson said. “We are working closely with national and international agencies to determine motive and identify suspects.”
The attack on Kap’s Café follows a pattern observed in other cases involving threats made by extremist groups targeting high-profile Indian-origin figures abroad. Indian officials have long expressed concern over Canada allegedly providing a base to Khalistani separatist groups, a charge Canada has previously denied.
