Gondomar: Liverpool and Portugal footballer Diogo Jota was laid to rest on Saturday (5 July 2025) in an emotional funeral service in his hometown of Gondomar, two days after he and his brother, André Silva, died in a car crash in northwestern Spain. Jota was 28 years old.
The fatal accident occurred shortly after midnight on Thursday on the A-52 highway near Zamora, when the Lamborghini the brothers were traveling in veered off the road due to a burst tire while overtaking, according to Spain’s Guardia Civil. The car caught fire after the crash. Authorities confirmed their identities using recovered documents and license plate details, with forensic analysis later completed at a local morgue.
The funeral was held at the Igreja Matriz de Gondomar at 10 a.m. local time today, following a wake attended by family, friends, and thousands of grieving fans on Friday. Liverpool teammates, including Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk, and Andy Robertson, were present at the ceremony, along with club officials. Jota had been scheduled to return to training on Monday ahead of Liverpool’s preseason campaign.

Diogo Jota Cause of Death
The crash is still under investigation, with a government source in Zamora indicating that “possible speeding” may have been a contributing factor.
Jota had married his long-time partner Rute Cardoso just two weeks before the tragedy. The couple shared three young children. Mourning messages poured in from around the world, including tributes from Cristiano Ronaldo, Prince William, LeBron James, and former Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp.
As Portugal and the football world mourn, Liverpool has postponed its preseason training out of respect for Jota, a player remembered not only for his goals but for his humanity. “He will never be forgotten,” said head coach Arne Slot.
