London: Warner Bros. Discovery has unveiled the full cast of its upcoming Harry Potter television reboot, which has officially begun filming at Leavesden Studios, UK. The series, which will stream on HBO’s Max platform, is set to reimagine J.K. Rowling’s bestselling book series for a new generation.
The new Harry Potter series will span multiple seasons, each adapting one of the original seven books, with a targeted release in 2027, 16 years after the final film hit cinemas. Warner Bros. confirmed production began on July 14, following an extensive casting process and several months of pre-production. Showrunner Francesca Gardiner and director Mark Mylod, both known for their work on Succession, are leading the creative team.

JK Rowling involved in creative production
Author J.K. Rowling will serve as executive producer on the series via her Brontë Film and TV banner. While she is not writing the script, Rowling confirmed on X (formerly Twitter), “I read the first two episodes of the forthcoming HBO Harry Potter series and they are SO, SO, SO GOOD!”
Her involvement has sparked renewed public debate due to her past comments about gender identity. However, Bloys said at a press event, “Our priority is what’s on the screen… the Harry Potter story is about love and self-acceptance.”
Familiar faces and speculation
Original Harry Potter stars Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint are not expected to return. Radcliffe told ComicBook.com, “I think they want to start fresh… I don’t think it needs me to physically pass the torch.”
Meanwhile, Tom Felton will reprise Draco Malfoy—not in the HBO series, but in the upcoming Broadway production of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child.
Several roles, including Lord Voldemort, remain unconfirmed. Cillian Murphy and Tom Hiddleston have been rumoured, though HBO has not commented.
The series is expected to run for a decade, with one season per book and possible expansions beyond the original storylines. HBO has committed to a large-scale investment, with production reportedly set to match or exceed House of the Dragon in budget.
“I’m very excited,” John Lithgow told Screen Rant. “Some wonderful people are turning their attention back to Harry Potter.”
