USPS Stamp Prices Up Again: How Much You’ll Pay to Mail a Letter

Washington: The cost of sending first-class mail in the U.S. increased on Sunday, as the United States Postal Service (USPS) raised prices for Forever stamps and other mailing products. The new prices, effective July 13, 2025, were approved by the Postal Regulatory Commission and reflect a 7.4% average increase across services. The move comes as USPS continues efforts to reach financial stability under its Delivering for America 10-year plan.

“The Postal Service’s Market Dominant and Competitive Services price increases take effect this weekend,” said Marti Johnson, Senior Public Relations Representative for USPS, on Saturday. “The Postal Service continues to take a rational and realistic approach to pricing… with letter prices still significantly lower than other comparable foreign posts.”

How much do USPS Forever stamps cost now?

As of July 13, the price of a first-class Forever stamp has increased from 73 cents to 78 cents, one of the steepest single hikes in recent years. Additional rate changes include:

  • Metered 1-ounce letters: 69¢ ➝ 74¢
  • Domestic postcards: 56¢ ➝ 61¢
  • International postcards & 1-oz letters: $1.65 ➝ $1.70
  • Each additional ounce (letters): 28¢ ➝ 29¢

These adjustments mark the 20th rate change since 2000 and come amid broader USPS cost-control initiatives, including plans to raise stamp prices twice a year through 2027.

Why is USPS increasing postage stamp costs?

USPS said the price hikes are necessary to offset rising operational costs and to keep pace with inflation. In an earlier April release, the agency stated, “Price adjustments are needed to achieve the financial stability sought by the organization’s Delivering for America 10-year plan.”

In recent years, stamp costs have risen almost annually. A Forever stamp cost just 45 cents in 2012 and jumped to 73 cents by 2024.

Kevin Yoder, executive director of Keep US Posted, voiced concern over the continued hikes. “The price of a single stamp could be $1.19 by 2030 if price escalations continue,” Yoder wrote in a letter to incoming Postmaster General David Steiner, who assumes office Monday.

Where to still buy Forever stamps at old rates?

Retailers like Costco are offering a brief grace period. According to its website, “Current Member prices valid in Costco locations through July 28, 2025.” Costco is selling 100-stamp bundles for $72.75—a slight discount for bulk buyers.

Forever stamps remain valid regardless of future price increases. That makes them a popular hedge for those planning weddings, mail campaigns, or large-scale invitations.
